Test method

ASTM G48 testing is a standard test for comparing the resistance of stainless steels and nickel base alloys to initiation of pitting and crevice corrosion. A ferric chloride solution is used and the result is a pass or fail for the material in a specific temperature.

Customer requirements

The customer is responsible for sending enough raw material for the ordered number of specimens, the material should be easy to handle. As a rule of thumb the material sent to Sandvik should not be more than five times the size of the material needed. 

The customer is also responsible for sending detailed information regarding where the samples should be cut, in what direction and individual identification of each samples if several.

Raw material dimension requirements

Required size of raw material for the recommended test specimen is 53x23x8 mm.  If several specimens are to be cut out from the same piece of material, an extra 5 mm should be added for each cut. It is important the the material sent to Sandvik is well marked with information about where the samples should be cut, and individual identification of each samples.

Test specimen dimensions

Recommended test specimen is 50x20x4 mm, although various shapes and sizes can be tested. If a sample is tested asrecived the test result will be more accurate if the area of the test specimen is known. Should your sample have an irregular shape please contact us..
